A MULTI-agency operation in Upington yielded significant results on July 25 as law enforcement clamped down on illegal activities.

A spokesperson for the ZF Mgcawu District police, Sergeant Omphile Masegela, said the “Operation Shanela” initiative targeted illegal gambling, non-compliant second-hand goods dealers, liquor traders and taxi operators.

Masegela said the operation was conducted on July 25 and involved officers from the Upington SAPS, Border Police, Public Order Police and K9 units as well as Municipal Traffic officials. It targeted taxi stands, second-hand goods stores and suspected illegal liquor outlets.

Compliance inspections took place at the local taxi plaza and second-hand goods stores. Taxi drivers received fines for traffic violations totalling R3,400, and fines for illegal gambling amounting to R1,200 were issued.

Authorities also investigated a residence suspected of illegal liquor and drug dealings. Alcohol and dagga with an estimated street value of R70,150 were discovered on the premises. The police confiscated liquor worth R7,176.15 and arrested a 29-year-old female.

Masegela said the police will continue with their “robust actions” to combat crime in the area.
