Sweden Increases Gambling Tax to 22% – ISA-GUIDE

Holders of gaming licenses issued by the Swedish Spelinspektionen will have to tighten their belts, in 2024.

In its proposed budget bill for the year 2024 (prop. 2023/24:1), the Swedish lawmakers have announced to increase the gambling tax from currently 18% to 22% of the gross gaming revenue, calculated per calendar month. The government addresses that it deems the 4%-increase as a proportionate tool to balance between the funding of state activities and the prevention of major negative impacts on the business as conducted by the licensees.

Until now, statements from further industry stakeholders on the proposed changes and their potential business impact were not available yet.

The changes are supposed to become effective from 1st of July 2024 on.
