Surat: The crime branch of Surat city police on Wednesday night raided a pan-shop in the posh Vesu area and busted an online gambling racket. Police arrested three persons from the spot.
The three arrested would take bets form people for matches of different sports like cricket, football and tennis. Police seized SIM cards and mobile phones worth Rs 4.3 lakh from them and booked the accused for gambling and cheating under relevant provisions of IPC.
Inspector Kiran Modi of DCB said, “We had received a tip-off that Gajanand alias Gajju Tailor (43) was running an online gambling racket from Panwadi Pan Centre at Ambrosia Business Hub in Vesu.We raided the place and found three people involved in online gambling.”
Besides Tailor, police arrested Chinanshu alias Chintu Bhaiji (41) and Hiral alias Jignesh Desai (41). The three would create user ids for betting on the website VMGS365.com and take bets for live matches.
Tailor would take SIM cards on bogus documents for running the betting racket. “This way, he cheated people who could not trace or reach him after the matches,’’ said police.
During investigation, it was revealed that Tailor has seven offences, most of which are related to gambling, registered against him at various police stations of Surat. Desai has also one case registered against him at Udhna police station.
Police said that the accused were involved in other criminal activities apart from gambling. They would earn money from gambling and use it for other crimes. Further investigation was on.
