SPRINGFIELD, ILL (WICS/WRSP) — With the big game coming up this weekend, millions are expected to bet on the game.
One certified gambling counselor is warning sports fans of the dangers of betting on the game. Elizabeth Theilen is a certified gambling counselor. She said there are safe ways to gamble on the big game and it’s important to know limits and boundaries.
She has seen gamblers go into big sports games without thinking about how much money they can afford to spend on bets.
“This is so new that people are going into it without any plan. So going into something like this without a plan isn’t a safe way to do it,” Thielen said.
Experts said to be careful of scams and fake websites while placing any bets and be aware of which websites or organizations you give your payment information to. They also say setting a budget or limit to how much you are willing to bet can help prevent some financial issues.
Thielen also says these tips also apply to other major sporting events, like March Madness and the World Series.
