Republicans in the Alabama House of Representatives will present a synopsis on proposed gambling legislation Wednesday afternoon at the State House.
An ad hoc committee of House members has been working on the issue for more than a year at the request of House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville. The House Republican caucus discussed the legislation in a closed-door meeting in January.
Gov. Kay Ivey said she supported the legislation during her State of the State address Tuesday night, but it has not been released to the public. A lottery or other expansion of gambling would require voter approval in an election.
Alabama voters have not had a chance to vote on a lottery since 1999 when they rejected a proposal by Gov. Don Siegelman. Ivey said Tuesday night it is time for voters to have their say again.
