Ranchi: Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Arun Rai was the main player in running a gambling racket from a rented house in Misir Gonda under Gonda police station, police have said.
The police are probing the involvement of the ASI and other accused persons arrested in connection with the crime. According to preliminary information, Rai had rented a house and hosted gambling parties.
Altogether 20 people, including 14 police personnel were arrested for gambling during a raid conducted at the house in Misir Gonda on Saturday night. The police personnel were from the district, Jharkhand Jaguar, Jharkhand Armed Police and special branch.
Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha has suspended nine police personnel of district police — the ASI, three havildars and five constables. He has recommended the departments concerned for disciplinary action against the remaining policemen caught in the raid.
The SSP said departmental proceedings have been initiated against the nine suspended personnel and that punishment would be awarded according to law. He added that the accused have also been charged with tarnishing the image of the department.
On Tuesday, Nagri police seized nine vehicles in connection with a gambling business in a local fair.

14 cops and 6 civilians were arrested for gambling in Ranchi. They were caught in a rented house in Misir Gonda locality, and Rs 3.61 lakhs were seized from them. The arrested cops belong to District Police, Jharkhand Jaguar, Jharkhand Armed Police, and Special Branch. The opposition BJP criticized the Hemant Soren-led government, accusing the Chief Minister of leading a team of gamblers. The ruling JMM party promised to investigate the allegations made by the BJP leader.
