Spain finalises projects for €1.3m gambling harm research grant

The General Directorate of Gambling Regulation (DGOJ), the national gambling regulator in Spain, has announced 26 projects will split new funding for research into gambling harm.

The ministry of consumer affairs launched the application process in Spain in April. Some 37 gambling-related research projects were put forward for funding from universities, health institutions, R&D centres and non-profit entities.

Submissions needed to be for projects focusing on harm or conditions related to gambling activities. A total of €1.3m (£1.1m/$1.4m) is being made available for this research.

Based on the State Research Agency evaluation report, the Evaluation Commission whittled this list down to 26.

It has also been confirmed that the execution period for selected projects is being extended until 30 June 2024

“These grants are aimed at carrying out research studies on disorders derived from gambling activity, with the prevention of the effects derived from said disorders or the risks associated with gambling,” the DGOJ said.

Confirmation of the grants comes after the DGOJ in September reported an increase in gross gambling revenue in Q2. Total revenue for the quarter was up 55.1% to €312.6m.

The sports betting segment reported the largest percentage of growth during the quarter. In the three-month period, revenue reached €133.3m, up 118.9% from last year.

Total player deposits were 19.6% higher year-on-year but 2.0% lower than Q1. Withdrawals were 3.0% higher than in 2022 and 2.3% down from the first quarter.
