While Elon Musk and company continue to push ahead with the rebranding of Twitter to X, it turns out one country has already went ahead and blocked access to the refreshed platform’s new domain.
For a while at least, Indonesia has blocked off the address “X.com” from the general public due to the domain previously having associations with pornography and gambling activity — two things than run afoul of the country’s strict content laws.
The country’s Ministry of Communications and Informatics announced that the site had been restricted due to previous owners breaching guidelines relating to negative content.
Explaining the situation, the ministry’s director general of information and public communication Usman Kansong said that the government had already been in contact with the Musk-owned site to clear up any misunderstandings.
“Earlier today, we spoke with representatives from Twitter and they will send a letter to us to say that X.com will now be used by Twitter,” he said to local media.
In recent years, Indonesia has proven to be extremely strict regarding permissions granted to online services, notwithstanding globally-popular ones such as Netflix, Facebook, Google, and even gaming marketplaces such as Steam.
For services such as these to remain operational in Indonesia, the government mandates that they provide comprehensive submissions detailing the type of content available on their platforms. Platforms that offer content with pornography or promoting criminality, for instance, will be swiftly blocked — as was done with Netlfix back in 2016.
