GEORGE TOWN: A police officer and six personnel were among 12 people arrested during a series of raids on illegal gambling around the state on Sunday and yesterday.

Bernama reported that the seven policemen, aged between 27 and 48, were arrested around Air Itam here and all of them were based at the same police station.

Penang police chief Khaw Kok Chin confirmed the arrests but refused to comment further on the case as it was still under investigation.

“I can confirm that seven policemen and five civilians have been arrested over illegal gambling activities, but I cannot comment further because it is still under investigation by the Bukit Aman police,” he told a press conference here today.

The seven policemen are believed to have the ranks of corporal, lance corporal, sergeant and ASP.

All 12 individuals were arrested during a two-day operation conducted by Bukit Aman’s integrity and standards compliance department following information received and intelligence work by police.

Following the arrests, police seized a laptop, a smartphone, RM10,959 in cash and gambling equipment.
